Finding Opportunities for Innovation
One way innovation begins is by identifying unmet needs in the target market. When businesses or organizations understand what customers are struggling with, they can create solutions that will solve their problems. Customer feedback is especially important because it helps companies see what people like, dislike or want more of. Market research and observations help companies see issues that they may have missed at first. Things such as surveys, interviews, feedback reports from customers and team members are useful for collecting inside and outside information. “Remember that team members are also internal customers, and will likely be as or more vocal than your external customers about your product” (Moyer). By using the information gathered they can come up with ideas that focus on improving customer and employee experience.

As industries change so do consumers, which means new solutions are needed to meet the evolving needs. Continuous learning helps individuals stay aware of what's happening in their field. Along with that, keeping up with trends helps innovators recognize shifts before they become popular. This awareness makes it easier to connect solutions to unmet needs in creative ways. By using divergent thinking before a trend becomes popular companies can narrow down their solutions by seeing them in a different way. Once they are narrowed down, they can use convergent thinking to be more realistic in what might work for the company and their customers. Overall, companies who stay informed are in a better position to act proactively and meet consumer needs.
Collaboration with diverse teams and networks is essential and can lead to new innovative opportunities. Individuals from different backgrounds, industries, and areas of expertise bring unique perspectives that challenge assumptions and spark creative thinking. Different backgrounds allow for different perspectives and ideas are much stronger when everyone brings their own. Perspectives can challenge assumptions and help identify problem areas that might have been overlooked. Collaborating encourages problem solving from different angles which can result in more effective solutions.
